| Hi! We are a family of 4 living on the North Shore of Long Island only 18 miles outside of NYC. It is a great location - 28 minutes by train from the most exciting city in the world. Because it is close to NYC, it has an urban sophistication while being a nice family suburb. Hosting an au pair is very popular here, so you will have an easy time meeting other au pair girls(and sometimes au pair boys!)
Our twin boys are now age 8 and are fun, funny and happy. We also have an adorable dog who lives inside with us.e usually ends up sleeping with the au pair! She loves to play and be taken on walks to the park.
We are experienced host parents of international au pairs - we have used au pair in america, cultural care and au pair international as our agency partners. We are hosting our 8th au pair our au pairs have been from Costa Rica, England, Germany, Austria, Brazil, South Africa (2x) and Belgium. No matter what country, they have been HAPPY, MATURE, and FUN to have around and be around. They have all loved our boys with all their hearts and we have loved them back in return. We treat you like family - you will not be treated like "the help" or a pampered house guest! Our current and past au pairs can tell you their impressions of life with us.
Our past au pairs have had time to travel and see more of the US than most americans. Also, they have had a year of seeing what living with a typical american family is like - a family that loves each other and enjoys being together. They have all made lasting friendships with other au pairs and americans too...one of our au pairs married an american!!!
So, what kind of au pair girl are we looking for??? Well, to be honest we are very selective. First, YOU MUST BE AT LEAST 21 YRS OLD...we do not match with anyone younger. Maybe you are thinking of extending for a second year? Two of our au pairs have been extension au pairs - and that has worked out great. We will consider an american au pair too - maybe you are a college student looking to work and balance school? Maybe we can make our schedules mesh. We will do live-in or live-out for the right person. Finding the right fit for both sides is the most important thing for me.
Our boys are in school and activities and our family needs are changing. We need someone who can contribute more to the running of the household in addition to having fun with and supervising the boys.
We have a cleaning lady who comes once a week to clean, but we need someone who can pick up the place inbetween and likes doing it without being asked. Help with cooking, laundry, shopping and even some computer (word processing) work might be needed. The more you help us, the more we will help you!
When you are with the boys, you should have a great imagination to play imagination games or turnaround and play american baseball or football (don't worry they will teach you!). They like to play outside and so should you! They take piano lessons, go to YOGA class, chess club, play baseball, lacrosse and other activities.
You should be someone who can give a time out as easily as hug. We believe that the boys should have boundaries and be respectful. You have to be able to enforce our boundaries and expectations of their behavior. They are good boys (just ask our current or past au pairs) and we take away priviliges or use a timeout when we need to and we are happy to say we give out more hugs and kisses around here than discipline!
We love to laugh and our household is a cheerful one. No sad, moody couch potatoes need respond - you won't fit. We think that having a spiritual base is important - it does not have to be the same as ours. We have hosted almost every religion and have loved learning about other religious traditions.
We are a close family - we like to spend our free time together, skiing, spending time at our club, the beach etc.
We will tell you more about our interests, lifestyle if you are interested..but please only respond if the duties and job sound right for you. If you think you might be a good fit for us, add us to your hot list and we will be in touch in April of 2008. At that point, i will be a member and contact you can tell me what you are looking for.
If we are not right for you, no problem - and we wish you the best in your au pair adventure!
