Au Pair/Nanny job description
We are a single mother and 10-year-old son who live on a small farm on Whidbey Island and simply adore the artists' community we live in. My son attends a Waldorf school, and it is important that his caregiver understands that a Waldorf childhood is different. It means no television or video games, lots of time outdoors, and lots of hands-on creative activities.

My son has had some academic challenges due to a vision problem and requires patient and supportive help with homework and school projects. During the school year, he will need about 4 hours of care a day. During school vacations, he will need about 10.

I speak German, but my son has forgotten most of his. I would love for him to relearn it.

I am deeply committed to providing my son with the best possible childhood that I can, and am looking for a co-conspirator and family member who can help me build the solid foundation on which he can build a happy life.

Family's Message to Au Pairs and Nannies
Last summer, my son's passion was skateboarding, this summer it was fishing, and since then, he has developed an unexpected interest in house plants. : ) It is interesting to see his passions develop, and fun to encourage him in them. He enjoys Legos, could listen to recorded books (or me reading) for hours, and loves to help take care of our bees. He is extremely shy until he gets to know someone, is quite discerning about people's character, and needs the people around him to be genuine.

My son attends a Waldorf school, which forms the heart of our "village." The Waldorf philosophy is not just part of his school day, however. It also defines our values and priorities at home. Whoever cares for him needs to have an understanding and appreciation for that.

Whidbey Island is the fifth largest island in the contiguous United States. Including the ferry ride, it is about an hour from Seattle. We live in the country on six acres (~2.5 hectares) of forested land, which is surrounded by forest on all sides. Because of our rural location, it is essential that our caregiver drive. Having said that, free Island-wide bus service is available a mile (1.6 km) from our house. There is a community college at the north end of the island, and a great deal of culture to enjoy on the south end where we live. There is nothing we lack by living on an island. We have absolutely every amenity and service you could imagine--often of higher quality than you'd fine in "America," which is what we islanders call the mainland. It is my deepest privilege to raise my child in a location as wonderful as this.

We look forward to opening our hearts and lives to someone truly special.
