Au Pair/Nanny job description

We are looking for a pro-active, flexible, loving and caring, fun and sympathetic, and kind au-pair who is going to help us out with the kids and with our daily lives. We also want someone who really likes to live with us and who is willing to be part of our family. It is important that you are willing to be an extra pair of helping hands in taking care of Femke and Michiel and also doing some light house-work (keeping the kitchen and the children's rooms tidy, do some washing and ironing, helping with preparing meals, etc.). However, please note that we have a cleaning lady who takes care of cleaning the house once a week, so we are not expecting you to do that.

Family's Message to Au Pairs and Nannies

We are a Dutch family of four: two married parents (Marlies, 38 and Gert-Jan, 38) and two kids (Femke, 5 and Michiel, 3). We are looking for a pro-active, sympathetic, loving and flexible au-pair as we think of our lives as a little bit too hectic, not having enough time with the kids and each other and too busy organising baby sitters and managing our daily life. Our children are really nice and cute (although everybody will most likely say so...). Femke is a girl of 5 years. She is very caring, friendly and considerate. She is slightly introverted and very ‘girlish’ – she loves to dress, put make-up everywhere, be a little princes, etc. On the other hand she is very active and sportive: she likes to swim, run, climb, cycle, walk, etc. Femke can speak very well – in Dutch. Michiel is a boy of 3. He is very ‘boyish’ as he likes to try and touch everything. He likes to experiment and wants to do everything that his big sister is already doing. He always has a big smile on his face and is a very happy and cheerful boy. He needs a little bit more ritual in his life than Femke. Marlies is manager of an institute that performs research concerning the quality of cancer care in the Netherlands. Gert-Jan is an international strategy consultant who is working and travelling a lot. Although busy, we are a happy family and we try to be as much together as possible. We take time for dinner and food, and do not watch TV too much. We go out a lot, to friends and family, to the parks around us or to the center of Amsterdam. We live in a newly built house in Amsterdam which is located on one of a series of man-made islands in a big lake just outside the city. Our house is very bright and spacious and is sufficiently large to live comfortably (and host an au pair) – it is not a large villa though. The area where we live is nice and (very) quite and is within 15 minutes of the city centre (by public transport) or 30 minutes by bike. It is easy to go out with the kids to play in the playgrounds or to go to one of the parks. We also have a nice beach close by (5 minutes walk) with a beach bar & restaurant which will be great if the summer is good. We think of ourselves as a good family to be with. We enjoy life, are flexible and will be very considerate that you will have a happy stay with us. We require flexibility but we will always be flexible and considerate in a very fair and decent manner to you as well. We want you to be happy with us and we will do whatever we can to make that come true. Your room will be on the second floor of our house. It’s a nice room with bed, couch, TV, PC, internet, desk, etc. The room is next to the bathroom. Our ideal is that you will be able to feel really part of the family while having plenty of time and opportunity to go out, do your own thing and be on your own. We will respect your privacy and appreciate that you’ll do the same with us. Marlies has been an au-pair in the UK herself and we think we therefore know what you will need to have a great stay with us. Looking forward hearing from you.
