Au Pair job description
Au pair needed to look after one/two greyhounds and 3 cats.

The person I am looking for must be a true animal lover and it is essential that they have experience of dealing with animals, especially dogs. I have a greyhound, 6 years old. She is beautiful, gentle and quiet. She is recovering from a horrific broken leg injury so requires minimum exercise, just 2 short walks a day, 10mins. So life is not much fun for her at the moment as she misses running at great speeds - I do not think she will ever be able to do this again. She sleeps alot and just wants to know that you are there for her. The most important qualities of the au pair would be to have patience, kindness and be affectionate.

Family's Message to Au Pairs
Dear Au Pair,

I am an easy going friendly quiet person and my main priority is the animals. To make sure that the dog/s looked after and fed and the cats encouraged to come indoors and mix together. It is a small house but I hope to be moving to larger place in the same area next year. With animals it is essential that the place is kept clean so daily cleaning of the kitchen, bathroom and lounge is essential. This takes 1.5 hours maximum.

I am happy when my Chloe is looked after, and now that she has to stay in alot, I am looking for another canine companion for her as I think this would be nice for her as she can no longer go out on long runs. The au pair must be experienced with dogs as greyhounds have spent all their lives in kennels and patience, kindness and discipline with an assertive attitude is needed to integrate a new dog into the household. For example, they have never been in a house before so everything is new and strange to them and the cats are a new sight too!

The cats basically look after themselves. The two boys are normally in at night time, but for some reason the female normally likes to stay outside. The au pair must be flexible as the cats come upstairs and sometimes sleep on the bed.

Chloe, the greyhound, likes to sit next to you on the sofa sometimes and if she comes on the bed and lies with you it is like lying next to a horse as she is so big. Obviously, now and then she will experience some discomfort but she never complains. The vet said she is the bravest dog he has ever met! She has to take tablets. The most important thing is that you can give her affection and kindness.

As I mentioned, I would like to bring another dog, which may or may not work, depending on the dog's behaviour, as greyhounds have spent all their lives in kennels, and to bring another dog into a home when they have not experienced life outside a small kennel before, requires patience, kindness and discipline with an assertive attitude when needed, to integrate them into a household. They are nervous, restless, cannot sleep so patience is needed if the dog is restless at night, or crying. Consistent behaviour and assertiveness is required to integrate the dog into the household as quickly as possible.

This job could also be a live-out job. For example, I was away 13 nights in September and just 11 nights in October and I am normally back early in the morning. This would suit anyone living in Hertfordshire/Bedfordshire areas or London as the train journey is very short. When you are here, it really could be a 24hr job in the sense that if I take a new dog, you may have to deal with the dog crying at night and being restless. But in return, when I am here, I would like to give you time off to enjoy yourself, so this is like a part time job, as I would plan to give you more than 8 days off per month. The pay is 55GBP per week.

If you are looking for excitement, this will not be the job for you. This is a relaxed and quiet atmosphere so you should not be a person who gets bored easily. If you are studying and need time to do things like writing, whilst keeping an eye on my animals, this would be very good. It is a small house and all I ask is that you give my animals the affection they deserve when I am not there and keep the house clean and tidy.

A lovely town centre is ten minute walk away with cinema, coffee shops, shopping mall, restaurant - it is so pretty. I have bicycles and it is excellent for cyling. An excellent train service - 20 minutes to central London. I cannot praise it any more. The area has fantastic language schools in the town. So if you love animals and are happy to spend time at home with the animals and do some daily housework in a quiet atmosphere, then this could be the job for you.

My first au pair stayed 18 months and did an English course and then returned to France. My second au pair has not done a course but she loves cycling and where I live is lovely for cycling. But she is bored as she does not like to spend time on her own whilst I am at work, and she is not a true animal lover.

Au Pair Testimonial...
I used Great Aupair and I found the most wonderful job that I could have ever imagined. I found a position with a family in New Zealand and have loved every minute of it. It was a very simple, cheap, and easy way to look through families that suited my search criteria. It broke up my search by country, ages of children, salary expectations, etc. I am grateful to this website for making the past six months of my life the most memorable so far.
